Whangarei

The district has 100 beaches along a 270 kilometre coastline, ecologically unique harbours, bush clad hills and a fertile hinterland of farmland and orchards.

At its heart lies Whangarei City, Northlands largest city, which took shape around the turning basin at the head of the harbour where in years gone by trade boats would turn in order to travel back down the harbour to where cruise ships now dock alongside merchant vessels.

Known today as the Town Basin the early basin wharf has become the home of a marina favoured by international yachties. Lining the waterside, colonial style buildings house restaurants, cafes, galleries and specialist shops while just a 5 minute stroll away lies the city shopping centre and mall edged by the city business district.

Peaceful parks with areas to sit, relax and soak up the atmosphere can be found dotted through the city. Often home to a gallery, sports facility or a unique venue such as the Fernery each has its own unique character.

Within the city boundary are two theatres, a cinema, venues with a variety of music on offer, rugby, cricket and multi-sport stadiums and a pool complex. The cities reserves offer riverside strolls and energetic clambers and a choice of water based activities. Within and on the city periphery are based a choice of craft, nature and history attractions for visitors to enjoy.

A very walkable city, Whangarei has something for everyone.
