The Tutukaka Coast has been rated by National Geographic as the second best most unspoiled coast line in the world. While the Poor Knights have been rated by Jacqyes Costeau as one of the top 10 world dive sites. With those kinds or recommendations, dozens of beautiful beaches and relaxed friendly atmosphere we can't imagine why you'd want to stay anywhere else.

Diving the Poor Knights

Nominated by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top dive sites in the world The Poor Knights Islands are a unique attraction not to be missed. Twenty three kilometres off shore these islands form a unique marine and nature reserve.

Over 125 species of fish call these islands home along with soft corals, encrusting sponges, vibrant anemones, kelp forests, visiting manta rays and myriad other life forms. Having been a Marine Reserve for over 20 years the fish interact quite happily with snorkellers, divers and swimmers.

Boat trips out to the island often encounter common and bottlenose dolphins and there are several species of whales, including orca, minke and pilot whales that feed off the coast.

Dive, snorkel, kayak or just take it all in from the deck of a boat. Several charter companies offer excursions out to the islands and cater to all tastes and skill levels. Dive Tutukaka operate an award winning service and offer both Diving, Snorkeling and Kayaking.

Big game fishing

The waters off the Tutukaka coast offer some truly exciting fishing. From snapper and king fish to marlin and shark, it's a great way to get your dinner. Simply head out with one of the numerous companies offering fishing charters from Tutukaka harbour and see what's biting.

Or for something more sedate you can always pickup a hand line from the local store and walk out along the beaches to try your luck off the rocks.

Beaches, beaches and more beaches

Blue Horizons is located just a short stroll from a quiet swimming beach, perfect for a relaxing dip or sunbathing on the beach. While the Tutukaka coast offers numerous beautiful beaches. From golden sandy stretches to quiet pebbly bays and hidden coves there is a beach to suit everyone. It would take days to explore them all but we can always recommend a few for those with tighter schedules.

Surfing

If your looking for a little more excitement at the beach, Sandy Bay and Wooleys are just a few minutes drive away. Both are popular local surf destinations offering a good day for pros and beginners.

If you've always wanted to learn or are just looking for a good day out Tutukaka Surf Company offer surfing lessons and board hire. Their van can pick you up and drop you off from Tutukaka mariner for a great day in the surf.

Kayaking

Tutukaka is a great spot for kayaking. Pacific bays sheltered harbour location is a great spot for beginners while the pristine and secluded Tutukaka coastline are accessible to the more experienced.

Pacific Coast Kayaks offer a range of trips for all skill levels. Kayak trips range from sightseeing to snorkeling and swimming and even kayak surfing.

Blue Horizons offers the free use of two Kayaks for guests within Pacific Bay.

Walks

If you feel like getting off the water for a few hours there are numerous walks around the region. You can head out to the see the Tane Moana, a massive kauri tree estimated to be over 500 years old or simply stroll along the many bays and beaches. We are always happy to recommend a few walks to suit your fitness and schedule.
